ExGKS: Extragalactic Knowledge System
|
|
| This is a modest project to explore techniques and tools to enhance the final stages of data analysis prior to publication. There is a
growing gap between the size of ever increasing data archives and the capability of individual researchers to absorb and compare these
datasets. Our goal is to begin the development of a knowledge framework through a three prong program; 1) establish a data system
that allows for flexible use, in our case we will be adopting an XML format that introduces several unique features when combined
with the Python interpretive language, 2) develop a system of network data retrieval that is independent of the features of the data
archive (e.g. ranging from password protected websites to simple sftp areas) and 3) present these new features and techniques in a
flexible, yet sophisticated GUI framework that the researcher can easily define and expand to meet their own needs. Our plans are
novel, but realistic. We will propose some innovative ideas, and applied them to concrete tools as both a proof of concept to our ideas
and as examples for other developers. This project has the larger goal of enhancing the development of tools to exploit the data in
NASA archives. The framework, as it develops, will enable Virtual Observatory capability to existing applications, provide new
techniques to combining data and literature searches and offer a flexible, user designed GUI system in which to explore these new
ideas. Our immediate goal is to provide the community with three testbed tools to outline our XML procedures, script browsing and
GUI construction. These prototypes enable inclusion of VO-like power to data reduction and final analysis, new types of viewers to
expand individual resources and allow wider science goals from our space mission datasets. |
